Beautiful Traditional Polish Clothing

 

Traditions are the important part of each country’s culture. No different in Poland, where there is tradition of wearing exquisite clothing for important events like weddings, festivals, religious holidays and other special occasions. It used to be that these traditional clothing were only meant for peasants to wear, but now people see it as regional art, a spectacular form of artistic display. Because there are many regions in Poland that have these traditional dresses each region tried to make each and every clothing unique by using different bright or dark-colored fabric, and also with different embroidery. Each region also can use a hat, vest, flowers, an apron, and ribbon to make the traditional clothing their own and show everyone that they are proud to represent their region.

My family is from central Poland and their region is in the Lowicz area. The Lowicz are known to have the most beautiful and the best represented outfit from all central regions, because of its bright and rich color selections and decorative embroidery. How do they look like you may ask; well, the men’s outfit starts with orange and green striped trousers tucked in black boots, and they have white linen shirts that have decorated stitched collars and cuffs and also they wear black jackets with black buttons on the back. The accessories that go with the men’s outfits are hats made with black felt material and it has the rich colorful bands around it.

The women’s gorgeous dresses are made from thick and heavy wool, with amazing beadwork all over the dresses, and the color scheme of red, orange, blue and green. They wear vest-like undergarments that are made with black velvet material with stunning beaded work on it. The skirt part of the dress is a couple of inches below the knee line and it has wide vertical stripe designs on it. On top of the skirt women wear an apron with the same colors as the skirt. Along with this amazing work of art done to their dresses, women also wear wide open-sleeve blouses that have elegant embroidery designed on them and are worn underneath the vest-like undergarment. The accessories women wear with these gorgeous dresses, are colorful kerchiefs worn over their hair, and necklaces.

This is Krakow’s Traditional Clothing

From all the regions in Poland, my two absolute favorite folk outfits are from Lowicz and from Krakow. What I love about Lowicz clothing is its gorgeous color scheme. What I love about Krakow’s traditional clothing is that it is one of the oldest traditional clothing going back many centuries, and because I find them to have the most unique way to represent their regions traditional clothing. I love how they incorporate big long eagle feathers as one their accessories and the amount of beadwork the women have on their dresses.
